Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy

Analytic psychotherapy involves regular sessions in which you speak about whatever comes to your mind, and we work through the material that you bring. There is a commitment of time, money and emotional energy. Psychotherapy can range from a few sessions to look at a particular issue to more intensive analysis over several years. The sessions I offer may be between one and three times a week. Psychotherapy provides an opportunity for you to reflect on your life and come to a greater understanding of your difficulties. Group psychotherapy may also be possible.

Reasons for seeking psychotherapy

There can be a variety of reasons for seeking psychotherapy including feeling unhappy, confused or in conflict. You may have been distressed through difficulties in personal relationships, or may realise that you are repeating unhelpful patterns and feel unable to prevent this. There may be a sense that life is bleak or that something is missing. You may be suffering from depression, anxiety, or other problems. It may be that your difficulties date back to earlier in your life.

Referrals

Usually people contact me directly but I am able take referrals from a doctor or other health professional.

Initial consultation

I offer an initial assessment consultation of one or more sessions. This can clarify your situation and enable a decision to be made about whether or not psychotherapy would be helpful.

The first consultation can be arranged by telephone, by e-mail or in writing and will be for an hour and a quarter. Further sessions will be for fifty minutes.

Fees for each session space are given on your initial contact and are reviewed annually.

Psychotherapy Experience and Qualification

My private psychotherapy practice began in 1995. I was Principal Adult Psychotherapist, and formerly Psychotherapist, in the NHS on the Isle of Wight from 2002 to 2011. I previously provided psychotherapy in NHS psychotherapy departments in London and Surrey from 1992, and worked in therapeutic communities for eighteen years from 1979.

My training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy was with The Guild of Psychotherapists, London (qualifying in 1999) and I uphold the Guild’s professional code of ethics. This four year training included intensive personal analysis and supervision. Membership of the Guild allows my registration in the Analytical Psychology, Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic section of the UK Council for Psychotherapy.

My training in group psychotherapy started in 1984 with the Introductory Course at the Institute of Group Analysis, London. I have over thirty years of group experience including group-analytic psychotherapy, art psychotherapy and training in psychodrama. I originally trained as a psychiatric nurse and have a BA (Hons) degree in social psychology.

Supervision

I offer supervision and consultation for psychotherapists, counsellors and health professionals. My experience includes providing supervision and work discussion groups since 1990 and a Balint Case-based discussion group for junior doctors in psychiatry for nine years.

I trained in supervision with the Society of Analytical Psychology, London (2005-6).
