Reasons for seeking psychotherapy

There can be a variety of reasons for seeking psychotherapy including feeling unhappy, confused or in conflict. You may have been distressed through difficulties in personal relationships, or may realise that you are repeating unhelpful patterns and feel unable to prevent this. There may be a sense that life is bleak and empty or that something is missing. You may be suffering from depression, loss, bereavement, loneliness, anxiety, sexual difficulties, eating problems, enduring personality difficulties or difficulties in communication. It may be that your difficulties date back to earlier in your life.

I am not able to help people with drug or alcohol addiction or those with psychotic illnesses who would need psychiatric treatment.

What a psychotherapist does

The psychotherapist is an independent person to speak to, who provides an opportunity for you to reflect on your life and come to a greater understanding of your difficulties.

Analytical psychotherapy involves regular sessions in which you can speak about whatever comes to your mind and we work through the material that you bring. The regularity of sessions provides a framework to enable you to feel emotionally held. Psychotherapy can range from a few sessions to look at a particular issue to more intensive analysis over several years. There is a commitment of time, money and emotional energy. The sessions I offer may be between one and three times a week.

Referrals

People usually people contact me directly but I am able take referrals from a GP (family doctor) or psychiatrist.

Initial consultation

I offer an initial assessment consultation of between one and three sessions. This can clarify your situation and enable a decision to be made about whether or not psychotherapy would be helpful.

The first consultation, in which fees are agreed, can be arranged by telephone, by e-mail or in writing and will be for an hour and a quarter. Further sessions will be for fifty minutes.

Psychotherapy Qualification and Experience

I began providing individual and group-analytic psychotherapy in NHS Psychotherapy Departments in 1992 and worked in NHS therapeutic communities using group psychotherapy for eighteen years from 1979. My private practice in individual psychotherapy began in Brighton in 1995 and has continued on the Isle of Wight since 2002. Alongside my private practice I work as a Psychotherapist in the NHS. I have also worked in a University Counselling Service.

I qualified as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist with the Guild of Psychotherapists, London, in 1999, and uphold the Guild's professional code of ethics. Training at the Guild included intensive personal analysis, seeing people for psychotherapy with intensive supervision, clinical seminars and theoretical seminars including study of Freud, Jung, Klein, and recent psychoanalytic thinking. Membership of the Guild allows my registration in the Analytical Psychology, Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic section of the UK Council for Psychotherapy.

I originally trained as a psychiatric nurse and have a BA (Hons) degree in social psychology.
My training in group psychotherapy from 1982 included training in a therapeutic community, the Introductory Course at the Institute of Group Analysis, and qualifying as a psychodramatist in 1988. I am experienced in providing training in group work.

Supervision offered

I offer analytic supervision, and supervision of supervision, for psychotherapists and counsellors. I have over eighteen years experience in conducting supervision groups and provide supervision, reflective practice, work discussion, and Balint groups for psychiatric, medical and other staff teams.

Following training in supervision with the Society of Analytical Psychology (2005-6) I was awarded their Certificate in Supervision.
